Discovering Nyungwe Forest: Chimpanzees, Canopy Walk & Rainforest Trails

Nyungwe National Park protects a vast tract of ancient montane rainforest in Rwanda's south-west. Scientists consider the forest among the oldest in Africa, and its altitude and rainfall have created a remarkable habitat: more than a thousand plant species and a dozen primate species, including large troops of chimpanzees.

Most visitors come for two experiences. The first is primate tracking. Rangers use moving listening posts to locate troops of chimpanzees as they feed in the fruiting trees, and the guided walks are a highlight of any Rwanda journey. Angolan colobus monkeys, in some of the largest troops on the continent, are also commonly seen along the trails.

The second is the canopy walk. A suspended bridge weaves high above the forest floor, offering unforgettable views over the undulating treetops and, on clear days, towards the mountains of the Albertine Rift. The walk is short, easy and suitable for most ages, and it is a wonderful way to watch the forest from the birds' perspective.

Nyungwe rewards those who slow down. The network of forest trails leads to waterfalls, swamps of giant lobelias, and quiet viewpoints far from any road. Early mornings are best, when the mist still clings to the canopy and the forest is most alive with birdsong.

Plan at least one full day for Nyungwe, or two if you want to combine chimpanzee tracking with the canopy walk and a longer trail. Global Line Safaris arranges park permits, lodging and a skilled local guide to make your rainforest visit smooth, safe and rewarding.
